Cordless Drill Buying Guide: Voltage, Chuck Size, and Battery Life Explained

Cordless drill spec sheets are full of numbers that don’t mean much without context. Here’s what actually matters when comparing models.

Voltage

Voltage is a rough proxy for power, but it’s not the only factor. For general household use, 18V–20V drills offer plenty of torque for driving screws and drilling into wood or light metal. Higher voltage (24V+) is generally overkill unless you’re doing heavier trade work.

Chuck Size

Most consumer drills use a 1/2-inch chuck, which accepts the vast majority of standard bits. Smaller 3/8-inch chucks are lighter but limit you to smaller bit shanks.

Clutch Settings

The clutch controls how much torque is applied before the drill stops driving and starts slipping — this prevents overdriving or stripping screws. More clutch positions (15–25) give finer control across different materials.

Brushed vs. Brushless Motors

Brushless motors are more energy-efficient, run cooler, and last longer than brushed motors, but they typically cost more. For occasional home use, a brushed drill is often good enough; frequent users get more long-term value from brushless.

Battery Platform Compatibility

If you already own tools from a specific brand, staying within that brand’s battery platform lets you share batteries and chargers across tools, which is often more cost-effective than buying standalone tools.
